FROM THE ROUGH SUPER SPOTLIGHT
"Most of them speak pretty
good English," Baty said. "It's
their second language. They
really like us coming over there
and training. They have a good
time of it. I get to know them a
little bit during the week and try
to handpick who I would like to
have as an intern. I've had some
good interns over the years."
Current intern Yang Wang
arrived in Bend in early August
and will stay until November.
He will also receive training at
the MSU Hancock Turfgrass
Research Center, where he will
learn how to drive a John Deere
triplex mower with Tru-surface
vibratory rollers attached,
operate a clutch on a Toro
Workman and how to pull and
park a trailer by backing in from
several different angles.
"If the interns had a choice,
they would like to stay
longer," Baty said. "Down in
the southern states they can
work longer, but in Bend we
pretty much shut down the golf
courses in November.
"Interns are a great way to
help teach younger students
and future superintendents. I
encourage all superintendents
to try and take interns when
they can. They're hardworking
and work extra long hours. They
will do anything to contribute
and learn what they can learn.
I really enjoy

Opening Up the Course

portion of the five-year renovation
project. Fewer trees dotting the fairways
are meant to convey a larger course.
