68 FROM THE ROUGH SUPER SPOTLIGHT "Most of them speak pretty good English," Baty said. "It's their second language. They really like us coming over there and training. They have a good time of it. I get to know them a little bit during the week and try to handpick who I would like to have as an intern. I've had some good interns over the years." Current intern Yang Wang arrived in Bend in early August and will stay until November. He will also receive training at the MSU Hancock Turfgrass Research Center, where he will learn how to drive a John Deere triplex mower with Tru-surface vibratory rollers attached, operate a clutch on a Toro Workman and how to pull and park a trailer by backing in from several different angles. "If the interns had a choice, they would like to stay longer," Baty said. "Down in the southern states they can work longer, but in Bend we pretty much shut down the golf courses in November. "Interns are a great way to help teach younger students and future superintendents. I encourage all superintendents to try and take interns when they can. They're hardworking and work extra long hours. They will do anything to contribute and learn what they can learn. I really enjoy around."
