By Margaret Brand The Review-Mirror Patients served by the Community and Primary Health Care's (CPHC) Family Health Team in Westport will be getting a whole new team of profes- sionals to serve them this fall. The new level of ser- vice will be provided by Country Roads Communi- ty Health Center (CRCHC) in Portland which will be expanding its services in Portland and Elgin to the Westport com- munity in November. "Not only are we going to have a full time physi- cian we are going to have a full time nurse practi- tioner, a full time regis- tered nurse, a medical receptionist and a pharma- cist who is part time," said CRCHC Executive Direc- tor Marty Crapper. Funding for a Westport physician from the Min- istry of Health and Long Term Care will be moving from a Family Health Team model to a Commu- nity Health Centre model which is funded through the Local Health Integra- tion Network which directs health care on a regional level with min- istry funding. Services in Westport will eventually become available to CRCHC patients in the Westport area who have been travel- ling to Portland for ser- vices. Dr Locke's patients have the opportunity, if they choose, to remain her patient under CPHC care. "The ministry's com- mitment is to improve what's available in West- port. That is a huge improvement. Dr. Locke is a point seven so she isn't even there full time," said CPHC clinical services manager Jenny Lane. The Westport clinic currently serves a roster of 980 patients said Lane, who noted that with the By Margaret Brand The Review-Mirror A cross-Canada ride to raise awareness and fund- ing to support veterans moved from Kingston to Ottawa through Rideau Lakes via the Cataraqui Trail on Tuesday and Wednesday. In mid-April, veteran Paul Nichols of Quesnel BC and his wife Terry officially launched the Communities for Veterans Foundation Ride Across Canada to raise awareness and funding to support veterans and to say thank you to the men and women who sacrifice so much for our country. Nichols is accompanied on each day of the ride by three veterans who join him on horseback after a lesson with Terry, a thera- peutic riding instructor. Paul is a former Cal- gary Highlander who served with the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry in Croatia. The goal of the 211 day journey is to create aware- ness and encourage dis- cussion of the challenges that our servicemen and women face as they transi- tion back into the world of civilians. "The Canadian people love their troops, and our communities will support them but often times don't know who they are after they clear out of the mili- tary," he said. The Nichols goal is that by educating communities and raising awareness to the changing face of their veterans, we can give them the opportunity to truly support their troops. After a quiet investiga- tion that lasted over a year, the Village of Westport and their Clerk-Treasurer Scott Bryce both face Ministry of the Environ- ment charges over the operation of the sewage treatment plant in the first half of 2014. The well documented problems facing the Snowfluent system and its operation over the past four or five years culmi- nated in two 12 million litre discharges of partially treated sewage into Upper Rideau Lake last spring. The charges, laid out in a village press release late Tuesday night after a closed session of council are: •during the period from Dec. 1, 2013 to June 15, 2014, they failed to ensure that the works and related equipment at the waste water plant were properly operated and maintained, contrary to Sec 107(3) of the Ontario Water Resources Act, RSO 1990; •between June 12 and 15, 2014 did commit the offence of failing to com- ply with the Provincial Work Order #1-BGAM9 by using lagoon #1 instead of lagoon #2 for land application at the waste water plant, contrary to section 107(2) of the Ontario Water Resources Act, RSO 1990.
