The son of a career U.S. Army officer, Bowyer is a self-described "Army brat" who grew up on and around Army bases across the country. After high school, he attended the New Mexico Military Institute Junior College before transferring to and gradu- ating from West Texas A & M University in Canyon, Texas. On Jan. 3, 1981, he reported for duty as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army. During Operation Desert Storm in Iraq, Bowyer served as a tank commander and was severely injured when an anti-tank mine blew up his tank. Some 26 opera- tions later and after serving in the Army for 20 years, he was medically retired as major. During his service and afterward, Bowyer and his wife, Iris, enjoyed camping. The Texas service shop makes a name for itself by employing veterans and serving veterans and active-duty service members. Active-duty military members and veterans who live in the Central Texas area comprise a significant portion of the service shop's business.
