But defensively, the Boilermakers
were up and down at best, a madden-
ing inconsistency that doesn't mesh
with Shondell's philosophy.
"We just weren't very good,"
he said. "… But I thought Neill
stepped up and did a solid job as
our libero, and (Katie) Workman
was pretty good.
"Defensively, we weren't that
good because some of our big peo-
ple didn't make a lot of plays. We
relied on a couple of people to make
a lot of defensive plays. We'll be a
little better this year if other peo-
ple have improved their defensive
skills."
The personnel will have to mold
together, something that the Boil-
ermakers couldn't get done a year
ago. But with a strong offseason,
Purdue thinks it's much closer to
doing so now.
"I think that the strength will be
the fact that what happened last
year, we'll be very driven to make
sure that doesn't happen again,"
Neill said. "You could talk to any of
us, and they'd say the same thing.
They don't want what happened last
year to happen again, so we're go-
ing to do everything in our power
to make sure that doesn't happen
again.
"That means seniors stepping up
and being the leaders of the team
and pushing forward, and under-
classmen following behind and
being on board. We have that this
year. This summer, we've seen that.
People are in the gym, and they
want to make this program the best
it can be."
