Environmental infrac- tions during the construc- tion of a solar develop- ment project on McCann Road in 2013 have result- ed in multiple charges to go to court in Brockville on September 9. The Ministry of the Environment was alerted to the situation after a local resident contacted the Township of Rideau Lakes with concerns about silting in Murphy's Bay on the Big Rideau. "The company was investigated and charges were laid. Northland as well as Aecon Construc- tion and Materials, Dessau Inc, Miwel Construction and four individuals were charged with 10 alleged offences of environmental legislation," said MOE spokesperson Kate Jordan. The charges were relat- ed to discharging a mater- ial into water (Big Rideau Lake) that may impair the quality of water, failing to notify the ministry of the discharges, failing to take all reasonable care to pre- vent the discharge and failing to employ best management practices for storm water management and sediment control dur- ing construction. It is the same day the Village of Westport will be in the same court to face two charges relating to sewage treatment opera- tions. Their charges are: •during the period from Dec. 1, 2013 to June 15, 2014, they failed to ensure that the works and related equipment at the waste water plant were properly By Margaret Brand The Review-Mirror On Monday at lunchtime in Gananoque Prime Minister Stephen Harper made a brief stop in Gananoque where he handed out Tim Horton's coffee with MP Gord Brown. A delighted audience of local Conservative Party supporters learned ahead of time the Prime Minister and his entourage would be making a stop at lunchtime at the local Tim's. Gananoque Mayor Erika Demchuk and Leeds and the Thousand Islands Mayor Joe Baptista were part of the crowd. MP Gord Brown learned about the visit on Sunday, a pleasant birth- day-eve surprise for the veteran MP who turned 55 on Monday. The PM didn't take the opportunity to speak to those gathered for his visit but did end up making an impression on his political opponents with one nugget which was record- ed after he got behind the shop's counter. "Tell me what to do, just don't let me handle the cash," said the PM to a member of the Tim Horton staff. Brown was excited about the PM's visit and the motivation it provided to his campaign team. The MP has been open- ing campaign offices around the riding and tak- ing the opportunity to can- vas door to door. "I'm getting a very pos- itive message at the door. People often tell me they're happy with the representation they've With only two of four school unions having set- tled their contract disputes with the province as of this week, it is unclear what disruptions students may face after school starts Tuesday. Both secondary school teachers and Catholic teachers resolved their bargaining issues last month but school support staff and the Elementary Teachers Federation (ETFO) of Ontario have not. School support work- ers, represented by CUPE, are in a position to settle negotiations but have voted to strike during this coming school year if the need arises. CUPE leaders voted overwhelmingly last weekend in Toronto in favour of escalating job actions to begin the first week of school. Their first legal strike day is Sept. 10. Beginning with work-to-rule, the plan will gradually increase to rotating strikes and even- tually ramp up to a full- scale province-wide strike. They have seven more bargaining days scheduled with the province through Justin Martin President 613-530-0773 RR 2 Westport, ON K0G 1X0 jtmartin@kingston.net 4 Septic Systems 4 Excavating 4 Landscaping 4 Road Work 4 Rock Excavating 4 Trucking 4 Residential & Commercial Snow Plowing & Sanding 4 Damp Proofing LTD. 75 units from 6'x6' to 12'x36' Easy year round access right in Westport 75 units from 6'x6' to 12'x36' Easy year round access right in Westport 75 units from 6'x6' to 12'x36' Easy year round access right in Westport 75 units from 6'x6' to 12'x36' Easy year round access right in Westport Soho's Self Storage Soho's Self Storage Soho's Self Storage Soho's Self Storage Soho's Self Storage 75 units from 6'x6' to 12'x36' Easy year round access right in Westport 43 Bedford St., Westport 613-273-8848 soho@rideau.net Mirror The Review Thursday, September 3, 2015 Serving North Leeds and area since 1893 Vol. 123, No. 35 $1 incl. tax "In the depths of winter I finally learned that within me there lay an invincible summer."
