The NHL MAX PACIORETTY IS MONTREAL'S NEW CAPTAIN An American is the Montreal Ca- nadiens' new captain, and he also happens to be a Michigan man. At 26, former Wolverine Max Pacioretty be- came only the third American to take the role with the storied franchise, joining Brian Gionta (2010-14) and Chris Chelios (co-captain with Guy Carbonneau in 1989-90). "To have the support of my team- mates, I'd put it up there with the top feelings in my life," Pacioretty told the Associated Press. "I've played with two captains here, Brian Gionta and Saku Koivu. I'll think back on how they handled situations and use that." Pacioretty reportedly opened his press conference by reading a pre- pared statement in French. He has been taking French lessons and said he hopes to master the language spo- ken by most of the team's fanbase within a few years. "It's very important for me," he said. "This is my home now. My fam- ily and I take it very seriously." Pacioretty is the 29th captain in franchise history, and while many thought P.K. Subban would be the choice, Pacioretty's teammates voted him in. "Truthfully, it doesn't matter who is captain, seeing as [goalie] Carey Price is the undisputed leader of the team, but Pacioretty's relentless work ethic on the ice makes him a fine choice," Marc Dumont of HabsEyesOnThe- Prize.com, a popular Canadiens blog, reported. "He's got tenacity, leader- ship and talent to spare, and now he's the captain of the most storied NHL franchise. And to think, just a few years ago we were wondering if he'd ever play hockey again." Pacioretty missed the last three months of the season in 2011 after suffering a severe concussion and a fractured vertebra as a result of a check by Boston's Zdeno Chara. Major League Baseball RICH HILL RETURNS TO MAJORS, ZACH PUTNAM IS BACK FROM DL Former Michigan pitcher Rich Hill is back in the Major Leagues with the Boston Red Sox, and he's making the most of his opportunity. After overcoming two major surgeries for his shoulder and elbow, bouncing around between four organizations
