STITCH SOLUTIONS Embroidery Business In the case of a hole in a garment, you can sometimes rescue the good with an appliqué. I've seen some brilliant saves where the end result is better than the originally intended design. In one case, the customer was so pleased with the "sample" of how their logo looked in appliqué that they doubled the or- der, adding appliquéd shirts to their original order. Another successful save came when the em- broidery professional did a reverse appliqué. They were able to cut out the ruined fabric and take the design to a completely new lev- el, impressing the customer to the point that they ordered more after seeing the sample. With heat presses and transfers, there are times that for no apparent reason, the trans- fer does not behave properly when you re- move the release paper. In these instances, you can cover the incomplete or damaged transfers with a different kind of material to create a whole new look. Ultimately, your goal as a business owner is to meet your customers' needs while mak- ing a reasonable profit. The customer does not care if their desired quantity is below the minimum, they just want to know how much and how soon. Make it easy for them, and just let them know how much and how soon. Skip all the details like order mini- mums and instead, factor in all the costs into the number of products desired. When you have damaged goods, look at ways that you can get creative with them to turn them into examples of different kinds of work that you offer your customers. At the end of the day, there are few good reasons to argue with your customer or to take a total loss because neither of these options is good for your business. Embroidery professional Lawanda Lawler of Joyful Embroidery turned an "oops" shirt into a fashion-forward custom piece. She covered a transfer that did not bond completely with some lace insets. She then cut off the sleeves and turned the removed fabric into embellish- ments on the shoulder of the shirt, adding a whole new level of movement. 46 || P R I N T W E A R O C T O B E R 2 0 1 5
