In addition to maintaining the 75 acres of playing fields, which includes cricket (the cricket square is in the centre of two rugby pitches, including the first team pitch), the grounds team is also charged with maintaining surrounding woodland and nature areas, as well as flower beds. Spreading the load "We introduced a wetting agent (Rigby Taylor's HydroPro2) onto the main pitch and, for the first time, heavily scarified (using an Amazone) to remove the thatch," Ed continues. "This was followed by with 60 tonnes of sand topdressing [the remaining pitches were each topdressed with a 70/30 mix] and a change in grass seed, to Limagrain MM60, plus a switch in the fertilisation regime to using Everris Sierrablen granules as a base feed. We then top up with Rigby Taylor liquid fertiliser and Sherriff Amenity GoGreen iron, as needed. "We had been struggling to obtain good results, particularly effective germination, with our existing grass seed and I had previously used MM60 successfully," says Ed. "We sowed it here and it came up brilliantly. We've also changed the frequency of cutting, to three times a week. "These changes – and a concerted programme of spiking (using a Sisis Multitiner) and aeration (with a Sisis Quadraplay) – coupled with the use of lighter tractors, (to minimise compaction) plus slitting will" he adds, "ensure the surfaces are maintained appropriately in the future. In the meantime, the pitch had been rested since 21 August and was not used until the Canadians arrived on 28 September. "The changes we've implemented have seen all the pitches improve, at no extra cost," adds Ed "Our budget hasn't changed; we've just spent it differently." l The Leicester team, from left: Ed Ramsden, Mark Bindley, Les Berry and Ciaran Kilduff World class turf maintenance equipment Sisis Implement Frames Perfect combination for synthetic pitch maintenance For more information on our full range or a no obligation demonstration call 01332 824777 or alternatively visit www.sisis.com Sports Fields Golf Synthetic Amenity World class turf maintenance equipment for synthetic pitch maintenance range or a no obligation demonstration TIF-SSS1000 180x136_IOG Groundsman_Artificial.indd 1 12/03/2012 13:17 See us at SALTEX Stand E070
