An empty page. Limitless possibilities just waiting to be explored. Anyone who's ever created anything unique understands the importance of taking that first step—of dipping the paintbrush, of touching the keyboard, or, in your case, of turning the wrench. It's thrilling. It's intimidating. It's the start of a journey with an uncertain destination. It's kind of cool to think about the very first time someone sat down with an idea to make something new and amazing—a light bulb, a welder, even just a ballpoint pen. Before all the testing and tweaks, upgrades and updates, there was simply a vision, and faith that it would somehow work out as envisioned. Great things can happen when someone—or a group of someones—finds the freedom and inspiration to bring to life something no one's ever seen before. A small committee of Ford employees and an ad agency representative discovered this in the early 1960s, when they were asked to develop a brand-new vehicle from scratch. A description stated that it had to be "demure enough for church-going, racy enough for the dragstrip, and modish enough for the country club," Jim Maxwell writes this month. Those words were given to Ford's Design Staff to work with, along with a clean sheet of paper. The result? Nothing less than the Ford Mustang—a clean-sheet idea that's still working out pretty well more than 50 years later, don't you think? In the automotive aftermarket, creativity becomes a hot topic every fall with the coming of trade show season. Hardscrabble mechanics and no-nonsense installers take a minute to contemplate the messages their work conveys, and how it allows car owners to express their unique personalities. The main reason for this, of course, are the great project vehicles that roll out this time of year. A diesel rat rod? A 700-hp bread van? Anything is fair game and no idea—from a bike ramp to a machine gun turret—is too outlandish or over the top. Factory vehicles are the blank canvas; the lump of clay. Aftermarket accessories are the tools, and custom shops are the artists, turning their inspirations into masterpieces on wheels. But even the shows themselves get the creative juices flowing. Filled with possibilities— maybe not limitless, but enough that it would take a lifetime to explore them all—the aisles beckon with never-before-seen products, and opportunities to expand your business in ways you never thought possible. So, be sure to get out of the work bay sometime soon and spend a little time getting inspired and contemplating all that your shop can be. It's your own blank sheet. Your own empty page. And only you can write its story.
