By Margaret Brand The Review-Mirror The Westport and Rideau Lakes Chamber of Commerce is seeking guidance from its mem- bers on the display of promotional literature at the welcome centre on Spring Street. The village would like the chamber to display promotional material from non-members in the currently member-only display. Chamber volunteers met with Councilor Ger- ald Schwinghamer and Clerk Treasurer Scott Bryce on Monday to dis- cuss the future operation of the facility. Representatives from the Chamber included Georgia Ferrell, Audrey Ogilvie, Carmel McCart- ney and Miriam Snider, "We were asking them to allow non-chamber businesses to put their flyers in the visitors cen- tre since we are provid- ing the chamber with the space. They have no lease agreement and they aren't paying rent," said Schwinghamer. While they have been paying no rent they have been providing visitor services during the sum- mer as well as part time By Margaret Brand The Review-Mirror Westport Mayor Robin Jones is encourag- ing her fellow county councillors to explore the potential of a regional police force for Leeds Grenville. Jones and her village council raised earlier concerns about police service response times when Rideau Lakes con- cluded the existence of a formal Rideau Lakes Detachment at Lombardy earlier this year. The move raised fears response times would be longer for services if offi- cers were working out of the Brockville office. An increase in the OPP policing bill from $108,893 in 2014 to $144,159 in 2016 was more cause for coun- cilors to pause and think. "None of the concerns have anything to do with the quality of police ser- vice. It's not about the work that they do. It's concerns about response time and the considerable increase of our levy," said Jones. A previous county council had been seeking a costing study of a coun- ty-wide police board. Reports which came out during those studies will be brought back to county council. Changes to the costing formula for police ser- vices stopped the idea of a county wide OPP con- tract in its tracks last year after it was realized there would be no financial advantages to such an arrangement. The new costing is based on the number of households along with a four year average of occurrences. Jones is encouraged about an August announcement made by the Ministry of Commu- nity Safety Yasir Naqvi to examine the 25-year- old Police Services Act.
