Issue 37 / MAR-APR 2012 MONOLAKE GHOSTS ALBUM OF THE MONTH GUESTLIST HOUSE / TECHNO www.guestlist.net RECOMMENDS ALEX CELLAR Extremely talented and devoted forthcoming housetech DJ. This artist was a clear favourite with us. Talented and devoted forthcoming house-tech DJ Alex Cellar, has been making small but sturdy steps in the underground house scene since acquiring success in the Spring of 2009 with the release of one of the year's biggest dancefloor tracks, 'La Palma'. Precise, minimal German techno with mel- ancholy undertones. This ethereal album swaggers into our top spot this month. The Berlin based, Robert Henke, who forms part of the duo Monolake with Gerhard Behles, is back in the spotlight this month with the newly released Monolake album, Ghosts. This album, entirely com- posed, edited, recorded and mixed in Ableton Live, is the first Monolake has released since 2009, and it introduces a darker, deeper, more evil sound to Monolake's port- folio. Ghosts has a symbolic meaning to Henke. He says he chose the name because of "the large field of associa- tions it provokes." Monolake's Ghosts seam- lessly bridges the gap between minimal techno and dubstep, creating an aural quality that transcends the listener's expectations and sets him afloat on a 60 min- ute pleasure ride overflowing with emotions of sorrow, isolation, melancholy and a darkness that whispers "get out of my head." The album reflects the German minimal techno sound that has dominated Europe's electronic music scene the last few years. This ambitious, experimental new release is well worth a listen. EVENT PREVIEW Kompakt / Huntleys & Palmers 23rd MArch @ Corsica Studios TOUR SCHEDULE SCUBA UK TOUR SCHEDULE Saturday 3rd March Hush House @ Mint Club, Leeds, UK Two top labels for a top night... Arguably one of the most cutting-edge clubs within the whole London's elec- tronic music scene, Corsica Studios is ready to host the showcase of techno super- label Kompakt, on Friday 23rd March. For the occa- sion, the German imprint will bring extended DJ sets from the likes of Sascha Funke and Robag Wruhme - who in 2011 strengthened his fame as DJ with a mix weirdly called Wuppdeck- mischmampflow and an outstanding podcast for Resident Advisor. Glasgow- born promoters (and name- sake record label owners) Huntleys & Palmers, who recently started a new monthly residency at Plastic People, will take care of Room 2 with loyals Auntie Flo and Matias Aguayo set to grace the decks. The latter can be viewed as the ideal meeting point between the two crews: his Comeme label is distributed by Kom- pakt (for which he's been producing music for years) and has been collaborating with Huntleys & Palmers for some time now. We strongly recommend to go and switch between the rooms. Expect top-quality elec- tronic music ranging from every possible subgenre of techno and house! Friday 9th March Bassic @ Good Life, Massachusetts, USA Thursday 5th April Ostgut Ton X Sub:stance Label Showcase @ TBA, East London, UK Sunday 8th April The Warehouse Project Easter Sunday @ TBA, Manchester, UK Since then, he has perfected his tech house sound full of swing, tribal rhythms and deep basslines with follow-up tracks such as 'Trapped in Dub' and 'North London Cutz'. Alex has spent the most of his adult life intensively researching the music, often spending hours and hours in record shops listening to whatever there is available, discovering the rarest and most exclusive old school and modern beats around whilst making his musical catalogue something that every DJ should aspire to. Alex's story is definitely one of talent married to dedication. A Greek national by right but a Londoner by choice, Alex's distinctive DJ style has made him a forwarded name amongst underground warehouse party-goers and has made him a regular at London's leading underground night club, fabric. However, Alex is not only making sweet noise in the UK but also in Ibiza's Underground, DC10, Amnesia and Space as well as the Amsterdam's super-club Trouw, Studio Martin in Budapest and Arma 17 in Moscow. This April he will be playing at several warehouse parties in the UK so make sure you check him out. And if you don't manage to see him before the summer you can always catch him this summer at Space Opening Fiesta in Ibiza. 29 Scuba and his label Hotflush Recordings have been persistently pushing the boundaries of electronic music in recent years. His has become a need-to-know name for any discerning club- ber, from his earlier dubstep productions in that sound's golden era, to his more recent transition to trance and rave infused house. His third album Personality came out on February 28th and it's another interesting chapter in his ever-evolving sound.
