domineering in racing is
making a comeback and fans
of desert racing are eager to
see it in action once again,
starting in 2016 with Tim and
Troy Herbst behind the wheel.
On a recent visit to the Herbst
racing compound before the
48th Bud Light SCORE Baja
1000, SCORE Journal got a
close-up look at this Class 1
Truggy, a 4130 all-tubular design
that's by definition half buggy
and half truck complete with a
triangulated 4-link suspension
and A-arms up front, a solid rear
axle out back and a 460 cubic-
inch Patton-built Ford V8, which
produces an estimated 850
horsepower, under the hood.
One of the first things you
see is the jaws of a shark
emblazoned across its fiberglass
body, a tribute to the WW-II
Flying Tigers, then you begin
wrestling with the amount
of serious engineering and
fabrication that went into
the build of this incredible
machine. It isn't long before
you are blown away by the
absolute genius of Landshark
and what it had done to
advance the technology
behind desert racing.
A quick look at Landshark
reveals a Culhane Turbo 400
transmission with a Coan
torque converter. There are two
shocks per wheel; one coil-
over and one 3.5-inch bypass.
The front suspension has 30
THE NO-NAME SHOCKS AND
COIL SPRINGS ARE EVIDENT
THAT THE HERBST/SMITH TEAM
IS VERY SECRETIVE ABOUT THE
SUSPENSION SYSTEM, SETTINGS
AND THE COMPONENTS THAT
ARE USED.
THE VEHICLE HAS 30
INCHES OF WHEEL TRAVEL
UP FRONT AND 34 INCHES
OF TRAVEL OUT BACK.
