The Place to Be A t a time when many private clubs are scaling back and scrambling to sign up members, one North Shore club is expanding and pushing ahead with ambitious plans to offer its members new facilities and a broader range of family-oriented amenities. For Renaissance, it's all part of an ongoing program that began in 2008 when Southworth Development of Newton, Mass. acquired the Haverhill club. At the time, the club was just a golf course, albeit a great one. The Brian Silva Signature Course at Renaissance has earned rave reviews from area golfers and played host to the Massachusetts Golf Association's Junior Amateur Championship in 2011. Just a year before, Southworth made good on its promise to deliver a beautiful American Shingle-style clubhouse – a design that earned the club a nomination for "Best New Clubhouse" and has become the Merrimack Valley's premier wedding and function facility. Since then, Renaissance has gone on to earn other regional and national awards. In January, it was named "Golf Course of the Year" by the New England Golf Course Owners Association; a few weeks later, the National Golf Course Owners Association announced that the club was one of three finalists for its "National Golf Course of the Year" award. What's next for Renaissance? A lot. The club recently received permitting approval for the creation of a greatly expanded resort-style pool area and tennis facility, both of which are slated to open this summer. It's now offering Sports Memberships for families, and also taking reservations for Camp Renaissance – a summer sports camp for the children and grandchildren of club members. But that's not all. In February, the club announced that it's also creating a state-of-the-art golf academy that will be headed up by Kirk Hanefeld, one of New England's most accomplished golf professionals. Renaissance has a bright future," said David Southworth, President and CEO of Southworth Development. "We're committed to making it the kind of private club that works for today's families, with a range of membership types and first-class amenities for everyone. It's the place to be on the North Shore – and it's only going to get better.
