BY MICHAEL SPATH A bout three miles west of the Anaheim Ducks' Honda Center, families flock to Disneyland, home to Mickey Mouse, Cinderella, a magical castle, rides and childhood characters galore. Signing a four-year free-agent deal, worth $16 million, with the Ducks Aug. 14, Carl Hagelin finds himself in appropriate surround- ings, his hockey career living out like the imaginary fairytales Disney is famous for conjuring up. In his relatively young hockey ca- reer — he is still only 27 years old — Hagelin has played in two Frozen Fours (2008 and 2011), participated in an Olympics (2014) for his home country Sweden and advanced to the Stanley Cup Finals (2014) with the New York Rangers. His life might look a lot different today had he followed his friends' lead back in Sweden, choosing to turn pro when they were 17. Hage- lin, however, had been contacted by Bemidji State University, and with the support of his parents, he enter- tained the idea of leaving home to play and go to school in the United States.
