together and making sure we've got our focus together and know what to expect," senior linebacker James Ross observed. "Those guys [redshirt junior re- ceiver Jehu Chesson and Lewis] go at each other and make sure they have everybody on the right page. They're great leaders. It's one thing to be a leader, but it's another to be an example on the field. Those guys are examples on the field of play." Lewis also showed some versatility in Michigan's 49-16 win over Rut- gers, subbing in at kick returner for Peppers, who nursed a slight injury through the week. Lewis took a pair of kickoffs back a combined 59 yards and nearly broke one before getting shoved out of bounds following a 35-yard pickup. Afterward, he admitted he'd like to make it tough for the coaches to pull him out of that return role. "It felt really good, having the ball back in my hands," Lewis said. "Now, it's make something happen with it. Of course, I want some more. I'm greedy with that." With the competitor that he is, Lewis expressed disappointment that Scarlet Knights star wideout Leonte Carroo did not play at Michigan due to injury. "I wanted to compete against him," he said. "We competed last year, and he's a great competitor. I wanted to play against him again before he left." Lewis desires to do plenty before he leaves, including winning a Big Ten championship. That could still happen this season, but barring a double move like those to which cornerbacks occasionally fall victim, he'll get a shot in 2016 as well. ❏
