TDR 56 www.turbodieselregister.com 111 NEW MEXICO TDR CHAPTER DYNO DAY In 1997, I lived in Nevada and first tested my '97 12-valve Turbo Diesel on the Dynojet dynamometer with a torque plate of my design (later called TST #10), a 16 cm2 exhaust housing on a HX35 turbo, a Walker 21468 muffler and 3" exhaust. The dyno owner asked what it would make beforehand, and I estimated 375 horsepower. He didn't say anything, but later told me he thought, "Sure, all the big block Chevy guys think they make 500 horsepower and they only get 220 on the Dynojet. Here is another such guy." It made 376 horsepower on the Dynojet. He then showed me a Viper result of 363 hp. The Viper owner later invested something like $30,000 in the "650 Venom Kit" and made around 500 hp on the Dynojet. By then, my Ram did better than that, and I told him he could get better performance if he would replace the engine with a Cummins diesel. He was not amused. Some of my early dyno testing was summarized in TDR Issue 23, page 38. The first "sport" Dyno Day (March 2001) was at that same place, Silver State Motorsports in Las Vegas, Nevada. The late Nowel Thomas organized the event for his friends, many of whom had Fords, who lived in Northern California. Several Dodges crashed the Ford party, mine among them. I still have the videos. . . Nowel's Twin Turbocharged, red and silver, 24-valve, two wheel-drive truck made 480 hp on diesel fuel, 580 with propane enhancement, and 643 with propane and nitrous. Richard "Maddog" Madsen's dark green Ford Power Stroke made 500 hp with additives. My poor old Sickly '97 Turbo Diesel benefited from a month spent with Lawrence Bolton's Dynojet (and a few [censored] parts from Diesel Dynamics) and made 609 hp on diesel fuel, with one turbo (Holset HX-55). After that Dyno Day, Richard transplanted a 12-valve Cummins into his Ford, and now, several years later, it makes about twice as much horsepower as his Power Stroke engine did. Richard now has a portable Dynojet and is bringing it to the 2007 May Madness for our Dyno Day. The second Dyno Day was at May Madness 2001. Since then, dyno day competitions have become quite popular. Unlike drag racing and sled pulling, parts destruction is not common. A comparison to other trucks can be made from the horsepower values and curves. The value of performance modifications can be determined unequivocally. Recently, the New Mexico chapter of the TDR (see www.nmtdr.com) organized a Dyno Day in Albuquerque. February 10 turned out to be a beautiful, sunny 60° day. We had lots of fun, hamburgers, and prizes from Auge's Dodge, Flash Automotive, Accessories Unlimited, Desert Rat, Trucks Unique, Central Motive Power, and Mountain States Ravelco. The distribution of the number of trucks versus the horsepower range compares favorably with other dyno events in the TDR. The high horsepower Turbo Diesel (Reymundo) was run on diesel fuel only, with a single turbo (Hi-Tech 64-14). The next two highest Dodges (Jeff and Luis) were also single turbo, diesel fuel only trucks. Joe Donnelly TDR Writer CHAPTER NEWS . . . .
