Village of Westport council held their second budget session Monday afternoon and one of the first casualties in the daunting task of whittling down the 2016 document was dropping a proposed raise. The second draft included a raise for coun- cil honorariums to $39,000, up 27 per cent from the $30,615 in the 2015 budget. Councillors currently get paid $5,000 per year and the mayor gets the rest but no one around the table was keen to take any kind of raise in light of the financial shape the munic- ipality is in. "We don't have the money in our current cir- cumstances. "It would be fiscally irresponsible considering the dire straits we are in," Coun. Mark Parliament said. Mayor Robin Jones By Margaret Brand The Review-Mirror On Friday, Village of Westport councilors voted unanimously to support the filing and issuance of a notice of completion of the environmental assess- ment (EA) to rehabilitate and potentially expand the wastewater treatment plant. The motion accepted the preferred alternative of the construction of a sub- surface filter bed disposal to the existing lagoon treatment. Last winter the village began the Municipal Class C EA of the wastewater treatment facility with an accelerated schedule to allow sufficient time for construction on the site by the end of 2016. Compliance with the terms of the $1.98 million infrastructure grant requires construction work to be completed by the end of 2016. Last Friday's council meeting was intended to be the final briefing by the engineering consultants before a final sign-off of the technical document for acceptance by the Min- istry of the Environment and Climate Change (MOECC). The new design for wastewater treatment treats effluent from the existing lagoons through the filtering on continuous year round basis into a large septic field. The flow of the waste- water through the field will replace the current Snowfluent treatment of the spray and freeze win- ter process with a back up of summertime spray irri- gation. The size of proposed field is engineered so it can handle flows of up to 600 cubic meters in peak periods and could result in an expanded approved rat- ing from the current 310 cubic meters rated capaci- ty to 350 cubic meters per day. A limitation on the capacity of the wastewater treatment site was identi- fied with the discovery of a formation of Karst with- in the area of study. The group included chamber members who have volunteered to serve on the new board as well as volunteers who would be pleased to serve the public at the welcome cen- tre on Spring Street. Tuesday night's meet- ing might not have hap- pened without a call out to the community last month, that, without new support the chamber would cease to exist. A December 7 deadline for volunteers was suc- cessful in bringing togeth- er membership on Tues- day. The meeting brought back some former cham- ber directors including Ken Rose, Chris Stone, Craig Jackson, and Marty Hawkins.
