163 we make our way to Mambo Beach. When we arrive, though, the clouds have parted. Even better, they've scared off whatever other bathers there might be on a Sunday morning, and we have the water almost completely to ourselves. A breakwater stretches the entire length of the quarter-mile beach; beyond it, the sea is dark blue and dotted with whitecaps, but inside the barrier, the waters are still and clear. I slather myself with sunscreen and head in for one last swim. By the time I leave, the beach is beginning to fill in a bit. It can't stay empty forever. But for now, for this moment, it's just me and the whispering waves. STAY Avila Hotel This luxury beachfront property is the oldest continuously operating hotel on the island. avilahotel.com ACOYA Hotel Suites & Villas The property's inland location makes a car a necessity, but the pristine pool and spacious, modern villas make it worth a little drive. acoyacuracao.com EAT Kome A trendy spot in the Pietermaai neighborhood of the capital, Kome is known as much for its craft cocktails (like a bacon- infused bourbon Old-Fashioned) as its scrumptious small plates (such as fried eggplant stacks and shredded pork tacos). komecuracao.com Hofi Cas Cora This new farm and eatery, located on a former plantation in the capital's countryside, is introducing the concept of "farm-to-table" to the island with dishes like cinnamon pumpkin waffles and chicken sliders with house-made salsa. WHEN TO GO The Curaçao North Sea Jazz Festival doesn't take place on the North Sea (unlike the original in Rotterdam) and isn't even all that jazzy (bringing in at least as many big-name R & B and pop artists as jazz acts). But with three stages featuring acts like Lionel Richie, Usher, John Legend, Wyclef Jean, Enrique Iglesias, and Randy Newman, it's a lot of fun. The 2016 festival is scheduled for the first three nights in September, during the island's less-crowded shoulder season. curacaonorthseajazz. com/nl/ Top to bottom, Avila Hotel offers sea views; Kome is a trendy hotspot serving craft cocktails and inventive cuisine; Curaçao North Sea Jazz Festival is in September. photographs, by Avila Hotel (top), by Hugo de Klerk (middle), by Andreas Terlaak (bottom)
