GOLD AND BLACK ILLUSTRATED VOLUME 26, ISSUE 3 25 athletically. "Kids rise to the level of expectation, in my opinion," Barnes said. "Once you gave him higher expectations, he has risen to every expectation I have given him." Swanigan has set goals. He's knocked them over one by one. He wanted to win a state title at Homestead High School in Fort Wayne. As a senior, he did it. He wanted to be Indiana's Mr. Basket- ball. As a senior, he was. He wanted to be named a McDonald's All-American. As a senior, he did it. He wants to lead the Big Ten in re- bounding. Through 12 games, he is. "I want to win a national champion- ship," Swanigan says. That one remains to be seen, but the body of work at this point suggests he should not be bet against. All this from a kid who'd have been considered a long-shot bet in the first place. Swanigan knows where he came from. He doesn't run from it. He ac- knowledges the hardships but also smiles as he remembers "some of the most care-free days of my life" roaming the streets in Utah with friends, before coming into Barnes' care. But that past is part of what drives him, the desire to make his family proud. It's part of what's made him what he is. "I am still in the tunnel and I have not reached my peak," Swanigan said. "That's why I keep working, to reach the end of that tunnel." When he does, look out. And when that day comes, Swani- gan will probably just go get some more shots up. j THE HILL GROUP CHICAGO ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION hillgrp.com We're Illinois' largest mechanical contractor, and we're proud to have 37 outstanding Purdue alumni on our HVAC / Plumbing team.
