GOLD AND BLACK ILLUSTRATED VOLUME 26, ISSUE 3 35 She was a captain a year ago, too, when everything fell to pieces. Purdue's chemistry was poor, leading to inner-team issues that never were resolved. "We probably should have just sat down and let each other have it, but we kept too many things in," Wilson said. "We were too afraid to step on each oth- er's toes, no accountability, no leadership, even from my part. It was game after game." Wilson set out to change that. In the spring, she began to be more vocal, telling her teammates if they weren't doing enough. It was about accountability; if a player didn't make her conditioning time, everyone was running again. Sometimes, Wilson would get critical, a tell-it-like- it-is stance that she'd not been willing to take before. "I've always had it in me," she said. "As a point guard, you need to get the best out of people. But Coach is always talking about not pointing the finger but taking a good look at yourself, and that's what I had to do and realize that I have the power. People respect me as a senior and the point guard. I had to make a change and it start- ed with that." Horrocks appreciates that kind of brutal honesty. In Italy, where Purdue took an August preseason tour, Wilson jumped Horrocks for something the center had done wrong, got right up in her personal space. "We have the understanding that between me and her, that's what I need and she can give that to me," Horrocks said. "But defi- nitely for other people, I've noticed it too — not (always) confronta- tional, that's not the word — but she'll tell you how it is at the be- ginning to help you turn it around, because she knows how to find the best in everyone." Wilson is willing to do what it takes. Since the 1984-85 season, only two groups of se- niors have left Purdue on a losing year, and Wilson doesn't want to join. "It's my senior year, my last go-around and Coach is always talking about leaving a legacy," she said. "I don't think my legacy was great last year or the leg- acy of the seniors last year. And I don't want that to happen to me." j The iPad app is available at the App store. Search "Gold and Black" for an easy download.
