86 GOLD AND BLACK ILLUSTRATE VOLUME 26, ISSUE 3 make it look like I just didn't ignore him completely." The correspondence worked. Purdue was willing to take a chance, one that paid off almost immediately. Although McClintock's personal bests were slower than the rest of his freshman classmates, he proved to be faster and was the Boilermakers' best, in any class, from Day 1. "It was a lot more fun getting to train with guys," McClintock said. "We all have our quirks, but our gen- eral personalities were very similar and we all got along immediately, which I think was really good for us. It was fun to have people to train with and run with, it made it a lot easier to go out and run a really hard session. Maybe you didn't feel great, but you have other people around you who are feeling just as poorly, as opposed to being in high school and the whole goal would be to lap a person on the track when we were doing a workout. Not a ton of motivation when you're already up by a minute-and-a-half." The competition fueled McClintock like never be- fore, and it's been the same ever since. He gets into "Matt Mode" before races, focusing in on the task, and afterward, he hates when he doesn't live up to his own expectations. After a race last season, when his time was slower than he had hoped, he chucked his duffle bag across the hotel room, straight toward a window. Didn't matter that he had been injured, a perfectly rea- sonable explanation for the performance. McClintock had a couple fleeting thoughts: My cell phone is in that bag and the window might break. Neither happened, but it was close. "You've got to show that emotion," said McClin- tock, who says he can calm himself with a good night's sleep. "You'll see me really excited, emotional when I win and you'll see me really emo- tional and upset when I'm not. I think you know that's when you've truly bought in and love what you're doing." McClintock is embraced by his teammates now, too. They under- stand his personality, when to prod him and when to leave him alone. They know that he just wants to win. "You can never really tell your- self, 'I'm doing everything I can,' when you see another guy who is doing everything he can," Kerr said. "Especially this season, with it being our senior year, I've grown up and run with him for four years now, we wanted to give Matt a team effort, a team season that I think he deserved, having given us his heart and soul for years." j The iPad app is available at the App store.
