The "W" factor: gender-based roadblocks
persist for women leaders
Employer fear of employee absences
from work to meet family obligations is
cited as the top impediment for aspir-
ing women leaders, according to the
4th annual Women Shaping Business
survey by Randstad Canada, a staffing,
recruitment and human resources
firm, in partnership with Ipsos Reid.
The 2015 survey of 1,0005 working
women in Canada found that 47 per
cent of respondents cited employer
fear of family-related absences as a
barrier to climbing the corporate lad-
der, down from 53 per cent in 2014. In
addition, 42 per cent cited employer
fear of work disruption from female
employees taking maternity leave,
down from 51 per cent in 2014.
"While family obligations and
maternity leave are still perceived
as significant obstacles for women
in the workplace, the data suggest
a slight improvement in attitudes,"
states the Randstad report.
Those who seek leadership posi-
tions need to identify their strengths,
unique qualities and ability to make
a contribution to an organization,
advises the report's authors. In the
survey, 71 per cent of women identi-
fied communication skills as key
to strong leadership, followed by
patience (57 per cent of respondents)
and compassion (54 per cent).
Shoana Prasad, executive coach
and founder of Glenwood Consulting
Group Inc., was asked by the report's
authors to identify the unique charac-
teristics of female leaders. "There are
leaders at all levels," she stated. "They
are the ones who listen, ask insightful
questions, play 'devil's advocate' and
offer counsel when necessary."
