The responsibilities of the Master Penmen include teaching and disseminating information, identifying potential in- ductees, and serving as mentors for those who desire to increase their own proficiency. Master Penman inductees are required to produce their own certificate as proof of their ability. IAMPETH's philosophy on the achievement is reflected in the wording of the Master Penman certificate: "For superior achievement in the fine art of penmanship and in keeping with the tradition of the great Master Penmen of the past whose skill set the standards by which all future penmen would be judged. One such master of penmanship is Jake Weidmann, a professional artist and certified Master Penman. He lives and works in Denver, and received his Master Pen- man certificate through IAMPETH in July 2011. He works across numerous mediums in art and calligraphy and is most well-known for his use of flourishing and hand lettering in the context of his fine art pieces. We have been working with Weidmann and transferring his original art from pen to print for almost a decade now with- out fully knowing the level of his skill set. We have been fans of his unique style and his origi- nal works, which have always created unique challenges for us screen printers. We thought we might share one of the more basic projects based off of his works for this month's article and maybe look at more of his work down the line. The proper pen grip, posture and technique were vital to the suc- cess of all penmen. In fact, many devices were put in place to ensure the correctness of these factors, some of which are uncomfortable to even look at. Uncomfortable though they were, they ensured proper form and function of the hand as well as overall posture with the promise of beautiful execution. Today, while many of the contrap- tions are no longer used, those who master the proper techniques of penmanship can work to receive their Master Penman certificate from The International Association of Master Penmen, Engrosser's and Teachers of Handwriting (IAMPETH). The IAMPETH Master Penman Society was created in 2001 to recognize members who had achieved a distinguished level of excellence in penmanship and the calligraphic arts, including busi- ness penmanship, ornamental and Spenserian script, Engrosser's script, engrossing and illumination, offhand flourishing, and text lettering.
