10 | MARCH 2016 nshoremag.com We are blessed to live in a place where we have access to world-class health- care. The North Shore is teeming with experts who promote all aspects of health and wellness. In this issue we celebrate the healthcare community, visiting area hospitals that not only help heal patients but also reach beyond their walls to create programs that promote healthy communities. Perhaps what struck me the most while putting the issue together was the passion the doctors, nurses, physical therapists, music therapists, exercise instructors, and nutritionists have for their work. The compassion, dedica- tion, and service these providers offer to our community is humbling. They are the true rock stars—and often the unsung heroes—among us. During my research, I had the pleasure of touring Newburyport's Anna Jaques Hospital with president and CEO Mark Goldstein. What impressed me most—aside from the obvious dedication of the staff and the beauti- ful renovations of the patient rooms and common areas—was Goldstein's ability to recall every employee's name as we walked the halls. His friendly demeanor and connection to the doc- tors, nurses, engineers, cleaning staff, and administrators was heartening. He truly has his finger on the pulse of the hospital's every aspect. I also had the good fortune of in- terviewing Lahey's Dr. Andrea McKee (our cover model). A radiation oncolo- gist, Dr. McKee has worked tirelessly to introduce routine lung cancer screen- ings for high-risk patients through the National Lung Screening Trial. Because of her and her colleagues' efforts, many medical organizations, including the United States Preventive Services Task Force, recommend CT lung screening for high-risk individuals, and the screening is now covered by health insurance agencies. Local doctors are also making positive strides in the global community. In late January, Dr. Rothsovann Yong of Lowell General visited Sihanouk Hos- pital Center of Hope in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, with a special delivery—an ultrasound machine bought and donated by Lowell General. Yong explains that the mission also benefits Lowell General by offering the chance to break down cultural barriers that might prevent Lowell's Cambodian population from seeking preventive healthcare. The issue calls out 50 top doctors in our region, as well. This is just a sam- pling of the talented doctors practicing right here on the North Shore.
