2 PAWTUCKET FEBRUARY 3-9, 2016 | VALLEY BREEZE | PAWTUCKET EDITION tion "several times" to address the situation and remove the debris, but hasn't been able to get any move- ment. There was some excavation work after he first raised the issue back in March of 2012, said Postle, but he's seen no progress since. "It's a mess over there," he said. "I've tried to hold back and not say too much, but it's gotten to the point where it's just got to be done. It's bad." Dylan Zelazo, chief of staff for Mayor Donald Grebien, said he wasn't aware of the issue at the cem- etery, having arrived in the city more recently. As of Tuesday, workers were in the cemetery and starting work on the pile, said Zelazo. He said he planned to call Postle later in the day to make sure workers were doing what he wanted. Postle said there's no way of know- ing how many graves are buried or exactly who is buried beneath the man-made mound of dirt and debris. "I couldn't tell you," he said. A row of gravestones that disap- pears into one side of the hill seems to belong to the Marchant family of the 1800s. Postle says it appears that at least five family lots have been bur- ied over the years. Cemetery volunteers four years ago unearthed a gravestone at the edge of the debris pile belonging to a man with the last name Fisk, who, as the stone indicates, was a sailor aboard the USS Levant when it was lost at sea in 1860. Postle said he's tried digging into the side of the hill, but found the effort was too much. He said chunks of cement have been dumped in with wood and other debris, making it impossible to do the work without heavy equipment. Former Public Works Director Lance Hill told The Breeze in 2012 that the pile of debris behind the public works facility built up over time and that workers didn't seem to realize they were covering over old graves. "What I have committed to is the removal of that pile immediately," said Hill at the time, adding that the work would likely take a few weeks. Postle said four years ago that the fact that the mound was allowed to creep into the cemetery was "really unbelievable" and said it "happened because of a lot of years of neglect." The care of Pawtucket's cemeteries has increasingly become a volun- teer operation as city officials have taken money from the cemetery care accounts to fill budget holes. Postle and his team have done extensive work to transform the Oak Grove Cemetery and Mineral Spring Cemetery, among others.
