Love, Gramma and Papa BIRTHDAY CLUB Progressive Democrats endorse Norton in District 60 race PAWTUCKET – The Rhode Island Progressive Democrats voted to endorse David Norton in the race for House of Representatives District 60 at a January meeting. "David has long been a hardworking, dedicated member of the progressive movement, and we are excited that he is running for this seat," states a release. Norton has "a strong track record of success," according to the organiza- tion. He created the "Organizing for Pawtucket" group, which launched the "Keep the PawSox in Pawtucket" cam- paign, "a feat that no one thought could be won. It was David's leadership, tal- ent, and passionate dedication that ulti- mately led to the demise of the proposal that taxpayers fund a new stadium in Providence. "This campaign confronted the power- ful conservative political machine that runs the Rhode Island Democratic Party – and won," states the release. Norton, who is running against incum- bent Rep. David Coughlin, is "a true Democrat," states the group. "He is fighting for working families and is com- mitted to the Democratic party's basic priorities like ethics reform, a woman's right to choose, common sense gun safe- ty regulation, and repealing the tax cuts for the rich – priorities that many Rhode Island legislators, both Democrats and Republicans, sadly oppose." Norton has been raising important issues, says the group, while highlighting "the culture of backroom corporate wel- fare deals." They say he is committed to fighting for "real reform." The challenger is willing to stand up to Statehouse leadership to fight for what is right, say the Democrats. "He has already proven that he can be effective, and we know he will be a powerful leader in the fight to bring Democratic values back to the state Democratic Party, the General Assembly, Pawtucket, and Rhode Island," they said. The group is sending Norton the maxi- mum allowable campaign contribution under state law of $1,000, and members plan to campaign for him leading up to the September primary. In addition, they also give to the Milk Fund, the Northern R.I. Food Pantry, and the Family Literacy Center, and have become leading local fundraisers for the Scleroderma Research Foundation. The Ben G. Mondor award was established in 2011 to honor the for- mer owner of the Pawtucket Red Sox. This philanthropic award is given to an individual who goes above and beyond philanthropically, within the community. Central Falls Mayor James A. Diossa will be the recipient of the Barbara C. Burlingame Award. Mayor Diossa is cited in his nomina- tion for these accomplishments: led the comeback of Central Falls after emerging from a difficult bankruptcy by working to correct the foundation- al needs of the city while introduc- ing initiatives aimed to stimulate the economic climate in the community, prioritized efficiency in government through the consolidation of city ser- vices, by partnering with neighboring Pawtucket for a shared Emergency Management Agency and Housing Inspector, highlighted the city's vibrant restaurant scene by found- ing an annual restaurant week, now entering its third year, and the imple- mentation of e-permitting at city hall. The Burlingame award was established in 2003 to honor State Representative Burlingame and for- mer Chamber Vice President, to rec- ognize a Rhode Island elected official who has made outstanding contribu- tions to the business community. The award recognizes individuals who exhibit the highest standards of excel- lence, dedication, and accomplish- ment in the public service arena.
