Blackstone River Theatre presents an evening of traditional Irish and British Isles music CUMBERLAND – Blackstone River Theatre, 549 Broad St., will present a split concert of Irish and British Isles music featuring the Vox Hunters with Lindsay Straw and Torrin Ryan with Kyle Forsthoff on Saturday, Feb. 6, at 8 p.m. Armand Aromin and Benedict Gagliardi of The Vox Hunters are musically bound by a shared love of traditional Irish music, which origi- nally brought them together, as well as an eclectic and ever-growing amalgam of songs both inside and far outside the realm of folk music. Combining Armand's multifaceted fiddle playing, Ben's self-developed concertina style, and a pair of complementary voices, The Vox Hunters present a repertoire of driving dance tunes blended with an unorthodox collection of interesting songs. Aromin is a violin maker and musi- cian based in Providence. He has studied at Berklee College of Music and the University of Limerick, and is a graduate of the North Bennet Street School in Boston, where he earned his diploma in violin making and repair. He also plays with the Boston- based Irish music group The Ivy Leaf. Gagliardi is from Connecticut and has played throughout the Northeast at festivals, house concerts, and cof- feehouses. He placed first in the 2014 Mid-Atlantic Fleadh Senior Duets competition with Jon Warner as well as Senior Melodeon and Harmonica. Since 2012, Ben has led a slow ses- sion and taught concertina at the Connecticut Academy of Irish Music. Lindsay Straw is a singer, guitar- ist, and Irish bouzouki player who performs traditional songs and tunes from the British Isles. Originally from Montana, she began to explore Boston's Irish and folk music scenes while studying film scoring at Berklee College of Music. Her debut solo album "My Mind From Love Being Free" was released in May, 2015. Torrin Ryan is from Attleboro, Mass., and has competed in Ireland at the All-Ireland Fleadh held in Tullamore and Derry. Torrin is the 2013 All-Ireland Uilleann Pipes Slow Airs champion, also coming in third place overall. He performs at many sessions in New England and also frequently performs with Pendragon. Joining Torrin will be Kyle Forsthoff on bodhran and percussion. Forsthoff has been playing the bodhran since 2002. Since moving to Rhode Island, he has quickly become a fixture in the session scene in southern New England and gigs regularly with Liam Hart. Forsthoff placed second in the O18 Bodhran competition and first in the O18 Ceili Drums competition at the 2014 CCE Mid-Atlantic Fleadh. Admission is $13 in advance and $15 on the day of the show. Ghost Army Lecture Sunday at Museum of Work & Culture WOONSOCKET – The Museum of Work & Culture, 42 South Main St., will host the third installment of its free Valley Talks series on Sunday, Feb. 7, at 1:30 p.m. Writer and filmmaker Rick Beyer will explore the local roots of the WWII deception unit known as the Ghost Army, and discuss his ongoing efforts to uncover this astonishing story. The Pentagon kept it under wraps for more than 40 years after World War II, and it remains little known today. Beyer has shed light on the Ghost Army with his 2013 documentary, a recently published companion book, and, as he will explain, there's even a Hollywood movie in the works. Beyer will delve into how they carried out their amazing deceptions, Woonsocket's connection to the mission, and his jour- ney sharing this story with audiences across the world. He will also bring a life-size replica of one of the Ghost Army inflatable tanks, many of which were made at Woonsocket's Alice Mill. Rick Beyer is a bestselling author, an award-winning documentary producer, and a longtime history enthusiast. His independent documentary "The Ghost Army" premiered on PBS in 2013 and has been broadcast in more than 20 countries. The companion book "The Ghost Army of World War II," written with Elizabeth Sayles, came out in 2015 and has just gone into a second print- ing. He also curated the 2013 Ghost Army exhibit at the Museum of Work & Culture.
