Lastly, the newest "green" material on the market are urethane-based films, such as Polyurethane. What makes these types of films dramatically different from the previous two is they are highly con- formable—even more so than today's cast PVC films. Urethane is the best of both worlds; it contains no phthalates, plasticizers or halogens (bad stuff) and is recyclable by both chemical and mechanical means. As an added bonus it is also REACH- compliant. Because this is WRAPS magazine, I can now mention vehicle wraps as urethane- based films are perfect for the vehicle wrapping market. This is because the film is much more resistant to mechani- cal damage from road debris or rogue grocery cart (it is often used as paint- protection film). It is also more durable as it will not become brittle and crack over its intended service life. So whether it is a vehicle wrap or long-term outdoor graphic, urethane offers a demonstrative advantage over other films. However, when discussing this option with your client, make sure they are prepared to pay extra for all of these advantages as it does come in at a higher price point than typical PSA films. Understand Your Media In general, understanding all of the different media types that are available to you to offer to your client base is a very good idea. This is why it's so important to keep up with the latest product offer- ings in the industry. Obviously, picking up a copy of Wraps magazine and Sign & Digital Graphics magazine is always a great way to keep you in the know. But understanding the "green" alter- natives to what you may currently be using is an even more important piece because you are going to be asked for it if you have not already. I would also urge you to double-check your printer compatibility with the cur- rent non- PVC materials available on the market—most are compatible across all ink platforms, but every material manu- facturer is different so do not assume it will automatically work in your printer. As always, education is key, so make sure to read all available technical documents as well.
