ND SPORTS Irish Roundup FENCING Notre Dame participated in the Duke Duels Feb. 6-7 in Durham, N.C. The No. 2 men's team finished 4-1 with its only loss coming 16-11 to No. 4 Penn State. The second-ranked women's team finished 5-0 to remain undefeated on the regular season at 35-0. After participating in the Junior Olympics Feb. 12-15 in Cleveland, Notre Dame will host the ACC Cham- pionships Feb. 27-28. The event marks the first ACC Championship the Irish have hosted in any sport. HOCKEY (16-5-7) The No. 10 Irish bounced back from a 4-0 loss to Boston College Jan. 29 by sweeping a series at Vermont the first weekend in February. The Irish won 2-1 Feb. 5, followed by a 3-1 victory Feb. 6. Notre Dame had home series against Maine Feb. 12-13 and Boston University Feb. 26-27 sandwiched around a trip to Providence Feb. 19-20, before taking part in the Hockey East Tournament March 4-19. WOMEN'S LACROSSE (1-0) The No. 7 Irish opened their season with an 18-5 win at Jacksonville Feb. 6. Junior attack Courtney For- tunato led Notre Dame to the win after tying for a career-high eight points, via four goals and four assists. Notre Dame was slated to host Stanford Feb. 13, Boston College Feb. 21, Colorado Feb. 26 and Califor- nia Feb. 28, prior to hitting the road to take on Louisville March 5. SWIMMING & DIVING The Irish hosted the Shamrock Invitational Jan. 29-30, with the women's team sweeping Iowa (258- 111), Illinois State (312-58) and Grand Canyon (254-115) on Senior Day. The men's squad defeated Mis- souri State 230-128, but fell to Iowa 220-150 and Grand Canyon 224.5-145.5. Both squads will take part in the ACC Championships in Greensboro, N.C., with the women competing Feb. 17-20 and the men competing Feb. 24-27. TRACK & FIELD Notre Dame competed in the Meyo Invitational Feb. 5-6 in South Bend, finishing with nine individual top-10 performances. Senior All-American Molly Seidel highlighted the weekend by breaking the school record in the 3,000 meters (8:57.13) by more than 11 seconds, a mark previously held by Olympian Molly Huddle. The Irish close out the indoor season with the Iowa State Classic in Ames, Iowa, and Spire D-1 Invita- tional in Geneva, Ohio, Feb. 12-13; the Alex Wilson Invitational in South Bend Feb. 20; and the ACC Indoor Championships Feb. 25-27 in Boston. — Jordan Wells doubt it was a little taxing for the Irish sophomore to represent his country while others received a Christmas break.
