2 – February 11, 2016 The Review-Mirror The mayors of Rideau Lakes and Westport are encouraging the South East Local Health Integra- tion Network (LHIN) to consider their municipali- ties as a unique area for primary health care. A change in the gover- nance of health care under a proposed new policy dis- cussion paper by the province, "Patients First" could potentially push the communities' health care governance to a regional level. A letter to the LHIN from the mayors cites the shift from the CPHC Fam- ily Health Team (FHT) to Country Roads Communi- ty Health Centre as an example of the benefit of local governance. The Westport clinic was governed by a board in Brockville which was also operating in Brockville and Gananoque. "The frustration which has led to the shift from the local FHT to Country Roads CHC was the direct result of having a board of directors that was not local and an administration that was too far removed from the population served. "The benefits of having local primary care services delivered by a local orga- nization were immediately evident. Patient satisfac- tion and organizational responsiveness improved as a result," stated the mayors' letter. The politicians remind- ed the LHIN that in the past the community has been identified as a sub- LHIN because it was rec- ognized that residents ben- efitted from services and supports in Perth, Smiths Falls, Brockville and Kingston. The new proposals from the government have the goal of making it easi- er for patients to find a pri- mary health care provider when they need one, see that person quickly when they are sick, and find the care they need, closer to home. The public can learn more about the govern- ment's proposal at a series of information sessions organized by the LHIN. Meetings include Feb- ruary 16 in Kingston, Feb- ruary 22 in Perth and in Kingston (French) on Feb- ruary 23. Contact the South East LHIN at 1- 866 831-5446 for more infor- mation or to register. Mayors ask for recognition of local health care needs Country Roads Com- munity Health Centre (CRCHC) management is confident of the orga- nizations ability to inte- grate patients from Dr. Elaine Riddick's practice by the time she closes May 31. The centre has full- time offices in Portland and Westport as well as part-time hours in Elgin. "We received well over 100 new registra- tions at the end of last week" says Executive Director Marty Crapper. In CHC's, doctors and nurse practitioners work on teams that include a wide variety of profes- sions. The Westport site of Country Roads is cur- rently staffed full time by Dr. Jeanette Hamilton; Nurse Practitioner Jessie Warren; Brandice Hartin, R.N.; and medical recep- tionist Mary Beauchamp. In addition, Dr. Lis Shoemaker is working one day per week and pharmacist James Hull is in the office half time. The centre has the ability to offer same day appointments for those in need and operates two evening clinics in Port- land and one in Westport. "The fact that we have our new Westport loca- tion open five days per week allows us to plan staffing and processes that help people transi- tion smoothly into the CHC model of care" said Crapper whose staff is forming a client transi- tions team. "Transitioning people from one provider to another takes extra time and effort as we need to learn about health histo- ries and migrate electron- ic records from one sys- tem to another. We are pretty good at this but will continue to improve," said Director of Primary Care, Cheryl English. The centre is currently transitioning patients from the CPHC Westport Family Health Team which CRCHC took over in November 2015. Priority is given to patients without a doctor or nurse practitioner and those with the most chal- lenging health condi- tions. "The bulk of the patients in this region are complicated. We have the oldest population as a percentage of popula- tions. Typically older people have more com- plex issues," said Crap- per. Registration forms are available at CPHC offices in Portland, Elgin and Westport and is also available online at the CPHC website at www.crchc.on.ca Country Roads confident it can absorb paitents There was a helicopter over Seeley's Bay most of the day on Saturday when Frost- fest visitors enjoyed the opportunity to get a bird's eye view of the village and sur- rounding area in one of Kouri's Kopters. Keep a jug of drinking water in the fridge. Remember, running the tap for one minute just to get the water cold enough for that one glass equates to 6 litres of clean water to process through the treatment facility, WOW. Also consider making ice cubes which takes a lot less water than run- ning the tap. When storing water in fridge, do not re-use a plastic water bottle, consider using a proper store bought jug for juices, etc. Until next week, WATSON says, remember to think water conserva- tion.
