The Township of Leeds and the Thousand Islands library board is looking for support from the town- ship to construct a new multi user building hous- ing the library. At a committee of the whole last Friday coun- cilors were presented with the board's vision of new facilities. The current library facility in the basement of the municipal building on Jessie Street is not large enough to meet current library service standards for programming and digi- tal technology. A remodeling of the municipal building has been one option which at an estimated cost of over $500,000 has been con- sidered to remedy the main branch's lack of space for programming and accommodating 21st century technology and could increase the almost 2000 square foot facility to just under 3500 square feet. A library redevelop- ment study researched last year identified a 'commu- nity hub' model as the best option to replace the lack of space at the Lansdowne branch. Other options including maintaining the status quo and consolidating all the library branches-Seeley's Bay, Escott, Lyndhurst and Lansdowne, into one super library. "When we looked at the four options, looked at costs around upgrades it is the best use of those resources," said library board chair Marg Atkin- son. The library's presenta- tion was one of three pre- sentations at the commit- tee meeting last Friday which included the need for major capital expendi- tures. Councillors received presentations on a Master Fire Plan for the township and a Master Facilities Plan which also identified needs for major expendi- tures including more than $500,000 in improvements to the Seeley's Bay Com- munity Hall and a reloca- tion of that village's fire hall to accommodate larg- er trucks. Council will be dis- cussing the documents, which are available online as part of the February 12 Committee of the Whole agenda. Township of Rideau Lakes council has directed staff to examine the municipality's festival license to provide an option for businesses which regularly hold out- door events. The mandate for the report from staff after a motion by Councillor Doug Good who is con- cerned the by-law and its enforcement needs to be examined. Outdoor events open to the public where there is an anticipated attendance of 200 or more at any one time require a festival licence, including those on private property. The license process requires submission of authorizations from other agencies and departments and proof of insurance. A minimum of 30-days' notice is required by the by-law. An amendment to the by-law could relieve some commercial businesses of Justin Martin President 613-530-0773 RR 2 Westport, ON K0G 1X0 jtmartin@kingston.net 4 Septic Systems 4 Excavating 4 Landscaping 4 Road Work 4 Rock Excavating 4 Trucking 4 Residential & Commercial Snow Plowing & Sanding 4 Damp Proofing LTD.
