T he upcoming SCORE San Felipe 250 is a story of threes that begins with three decades of racing in San Felipe, as this will be the 30th anniversary. The last three races, however, have been won by Gustavo Vildosola Jr. (Tavo). Vildosola is in a three-way tie for most overall wins in a single SCORE race. If Tavo can "four-peat" at the SCORE San Felipe 250, he will be the first SCORE driver ever to win the same race four times in a row. Now at age 34, Tavo has a long history of racing. He entered his first race at 16 in a 1/2- 1600 buggy. It was the Record Series Ensenada to San Felipe event. He teamed with Rodrigo Ampudia and finished second in GUS VILDOSOLA JR. (TAVO) IS LOOKING TO MAKE HISTORY BY WINNING THE SCORE SAN FELIPE 250 FOUR TIMES IN A ROW. PHOTO PROVIDED BY TOYO TIRES class. He later moved on from 1600s to a Pro Truck when it was in its prime, and later moved to the SCORE Trophy Truck division. Tavo is an advocate of racers starting in the limited classes and working their way up to Trophy Truck. "Whether you are 16 or 36, learning to race in a 1600 teaches you about momentum," Tavo said. "With only 70 horsepower you have to drive aggressive. I think that is what really formed me as a driver as those were really important years for me. You can make a lot more mistakes in a Trophy Truck or Class 1 than you can in a 1600. In my early days racing in Trophy Truck I was two steps beyond where I should have been; I overdrove it and was thus able to break it." Vildosola was a super aggressive driver in his early years, but while he is still a hard charging aggressive driver, he knows when to back it down and save the equipment. We sat down with Tavo to talk about his upcoming attempt to win a forth SCORE San Felipe 250, and his years behind the wheel.
