W
hen Morgan Burke talked on Feb. 17 about
transition plans to end his tenure as
Purdue's athletic director, he was pretty
matter of fact.
"It shouldn't be new news," said Burke, who after
23 years holds the fourth-longest tenure among FBS
athletic directors at the same institution.
Five days earlier, Burke told Purdue boosters at
the annual Mollenkopf/Keyes Classic in Naples, Fla.
— and then released a public statement — that he'd
end his term when his contract was up in June 2017.
It maybe wasn't necessary to do so: Like he said,
his contract is what it is and Indiana has an "age 65
rule."
But Burke said he knew an announcement would
bring some sort of "finality" to the future of Purdue
athletics, as it related to his tenure.
"When I came, I think the three things I might have
said in the press conference were I love kids, I love
Purdue and I love competition. That hasn't changed.
But it is time for a change, and I understand that,"

Morgan Burke was reflective when he met the media in
mid-February.
