32 GOLD AND BLACK ILLUSTRATED tough mindset and be really hungry. She doesn't re- alize how good she can be." There have been enough moments this season, though, to show what McBryde can become. During a four-game stretch in the middle of the Big Ten, the Bedford, Ind., native averaged 16 points and nearly six rebounds per game, getting 22 points and eight boards in only 22 minutes in a win over Minnesota and then having 18 and six in 24 minutes over Iowa. She leveled off a bit after, not getting as many quality touches inside as opponents started to devel- op better scouting reports and getting too frequently into foul trouble. But the stage had been set. "I see her averaging a double-double for us in the short future," assistant coach Lindsay Wisdom-Hylton said. "You've seen her numbers increase this sea- son, going from our eighth-highest scorer (in the non-conference) to third or fourth (now). She can score and we're trying to get her the ball in positions to be successful." And trying to get her to be offensively focused when she does have it. That's not always been easy. Going back to eighth grade, McBryde can remem- ber others getting on her case, knowing that if she just got an attitude adjustment she could be domi- nant. "My mom never played basketball at all, but she got after me," said McBryde, who played for Damon Bailey for a season at Bedford North Lawrence, where she twice won state titles during her four years. "(She) was like, 'You could be so good if you would just look,' and then I started hearing that from Damon and all my other coaches in high school. I've been hearing about it a while." Tom Campbell Freshman Dominique McBryde has shown a more aggressive style during Big Ten play, and thus she's garnered more and more attention from defenders, but Purdue's coaches believe there's more she can give.
