VOLUME 26, ISSUE 4 33 It continued at Purdue. In the preseason, the coaching staff wanted to bring the aggression out of McBryde, so in half-court offensive sets, it charged her with looking for those openings. And then taking them. If she didn't, there were consequences. "Tough love," McBryde called it. "They'd either yell at me or tell me to (run) a down- and-back," she said. Gradually, McBryde began to catch on; she hit dou- ble-digit shot attempts for the first time on Jan. 7 against Northwestern, in the 14th game of the sea- son, and she had three more such performances in the next five games. In the first eight games this sea- son, she had 14 attempts … total. "You kind of have to do a little good cop/bad cop," Wisdom-Hylton said. "You have to get on her, yell at her, for not looking to score. But also you have to explain to her the importance she has on this team, what we need her to do. (You have to) really talk to her about how good she is and give her the confi- dence she needs to build mentally, give her the mind- set that she needs to score." Perhaps none better to teach McBryde than Wis- dom-Hylton. The assistant coach had been the same during her years as a player at Purdue, being too pas- sive at times on the offensive end, looking for others rather than imposing her own stamp on the game. McBryde might not be the defensive player — Wis- dom-Hylton, after all, finished her career with a Pur- due-record 281 blocks — but her offensive ceiling is higher. "I see myself in her," Wisdom-Hylton said. "We're similar in that we're reserved. We don't show our emo- tion a ton. We just kind of get it done." McBryde can certainly do that. The forward has an innate ability to score around the basket, getting the ball to the rim when it looks like there's not much room to do so. Her length helps and she's got quickness, particu- THE HILL GROUP CHICAGO ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION hillgrp.com We're Illinois' largest mechanical contractor, and we're proud to have 37 outstanding Purdue alumni on our HVAC / Plumbing team.
