Kawann Short's season ended a victory short
of his Carolina Panthers' goal, when they fell to Den-
ver in Super Bowl 50 in early February. But it didn't
do much to diminish Short's breakout season; the
third-year professional was twice the NFC Defensive
Player-of-the-Month (October and December) and
was selected to the Pro Bowl for the first time, al-
though he didn't play because of the Super Bowl.
The defensive tackle finished the season with 11
sacks, more than twice the total of his first two years
in the NFL, with 55 tackles, four passes broken up
and three forced fumbles. Short has one year remain-
ing on his rookie contract with the Panthers, with a
big payday likely coming this offseason or next.
Drew Brees has one year remaining on his
contract with the New Orleans Saints, but it doesn't
look like the NFL veteran will be leaving the Big Easy
any time soon. In February, Saints GM Mickey Loomis
said he not only wants to keep Brees for his remain-
ing season but wants to extend his contract, as well.
"I know he feels like he's got more years left in
him. I would say we feel that way as well," Loomis
