10 GOLD AND BLACK ILLUSTRATED Sports moments during the Burke Era 5 Boudia's reign: During Burke's 23 years as Purdue's AD, he's seen hundreds — perhaps thousands — of athletes earn individual accolades. None, however, can match those of David Boudia. The diver was a six-time NCAA champion (from 2009-2011) and eight-time Big Ten champ. And, of course, in 2012, Boudia won the gold medal in the 10-meter platform at the London Olympics. 4 Golf wins title: Purdue made golf a northern sport. In 2010, the Boiler- maker women's team culminated a string of five con- secutive top-10 finishes at the NCAA Championship with a national title. It became the first for a cold-weather program and it was additional tangible evidence that Burke's emphasis on raising the standards and facilities of all teams could yield results. 3 Three-Pete: It might never happen again. In 1994, '95 and '96, the Boilermakers won back-to-back-to-back Big Ten titles, the last men's conference program to complete such a feat. More impressive? Purdue wasn't the odds-on favorite but used that underdog mentality to win 80-of-98 games in the three years, including a 44-10 mark in the Big Ten. 2 Women win it all: The Boilermakers had undergone a lot of change in the mid-to-late 1990s, with three coaches in a four-year span. Each of Burke's hires, though, proved to be a good one, the last — Carolyn Peck — guided the Boilermakers to the '99 nation- al championship, behind the play of seniors Stephanie White and Ukari Figgs. 1 Smelling Roses: Purdue's October run in 2000 was storybook, with comebacks and big plays, strong leadership and good coaching. A month later, the Boilermakers earned a trip to the 2001 Rose Bowl, their first trip to Pasadena since 1967. Drew Brees and Joe Tiller — and the rest of that Purdue team — mark the high point for many Boilermaker fans. — Kyle Charters "Morgan (Burke) has done a terrific job of hiring coaches. Our athletic department, right now, since I've been here, has the best coaches that we've had." Volleyball coach Dave Shondell "We have a great tradition in Purdue basketball (and) we have it because of guys like Rick Mount." Basketball coach Matt Painter "If we were to find a (athletic director) candidate that we are extremely enthusiastic about ... we would hire them if it was tomorrow or August."
