112 SUPER SPOTLIGHT More than 10 years in the business world helped prepare Joe Wachter for a career in golf course maintenance. The unique path that led him to his current position as golf course superintendent at Glen Echo Country Club in the greater St. Louis area began as terminal manager for school district bus transportation systems in St. Louis for Ryder System Inc. "That really helped me," Joe, 58, said. "I worked at multiple million-dollar operations and employed up to 150-200 people at a time. I knew what it was like to work with school boards. I had to learn the turf side." His younger brother, Ed, helped him make the transition to a new profession. "He's the best superintendent that I know," Joe said. "Luckily I have him as a brother." Ed is superintendent at the Franklin County Country Club in Washington, Mo. HELPING HAND He got into the business as assistant superintendent at Sunset Country Club in St. Louis in 1990.
