114 SUPER SPOTLIGHT "I ended up getting hired at a club right near my home," Joe said. "Superintendent Lee Redman, now retired, took a chance on me, and the rest is history." Joe's journey to Glen Echo spanned 18 years with stops at both public and private courses. "I moved up the ladder in facilities and took 11 junior college courses over the first years in the business," Joe said. "A lot of my knowledge base came from exchanging ideas and information with other superintendents. I've challenged myself to continue to grow." That went hand-in-hand with increasing levels of responsibility. After three years as an assistant superintendent, he worked 15 years as superintendent at three courses before landing his current job at Glen Echo in 2008. "I also had the opportunity to meet a lot of people around the world using services like TurfNet, the GCSAA and other forums. You can exchange information with a lot of the best superintendents in the world, from nine-hole facilities to the top-rated courses. "Guys with nine-hole facilities have just as good ideas as some of the best clubs in the world," Joe said. "The just don't have the type of facilities that the others do. Actually it's a little bit more difficult what they have to do." Glen renovation total
