The average base salary for
superintendents rose from $82,573 in
2013 to $85,204 in 2015, a 3.2 percent
increase in the two-year period. For
assistant superintendents, in 2015, the
average base salary rose to $41,372
from $40,138 in 2013, representing a 1.2
percent increase.
But more important than being active
or earning a salary is fi nding balance in
life. After all there's only 168 hours in
a week. Some superintendents succeed
better at this than others.
Steve Cook, superintendent at Oakland
Hills Country Club in Bloomfi eld Hills,
Mich., shares his story about climbing
the 22,349-foot Ama Dablam peak
in Nepal in this issue. Climbing is a
way for him to literally get off the golf
course.
Jim Myers, superintendent at The
Plateau Club in Seattle, recounts his
busy year that included two trips to Asia.
Going out of the country is not the
only way to fi nd balance between the
commitment of work and personal life.
It's all too easy to let the demands pile
up too high during the golfi ng season.
These thoughts can build up stress and
lead to confrontational issues at work
and home.
It's equally important for
superintendents to learn how to
decompress from their job. Those who
are successful at fi nding the proper
medium between work and home are
much happier.
Leaving work at work will reduce
stress and actually make one more
productive.
