87 SXSWedu 2016 Conference Overview About Special Programs Socials Monday Monday 5:00 PM - 6:00 PM Continuing Education Students Unfiltered: Digital in the Classroom Hilton | Salon J | Panel | #SXSWDigEdu CPE There is a multitude of digital tools available to students aimed at increasing engagement and improving student outcomes. But are students using these tools, and to what extent? Forget the BS, drop the sales pitch and join an interactive conversation that brings stu- dents - the most important part of the equation - to the spotlight. This session will seek to understand how technology's increasingly important role in the classroom impacts students. By asking critical questions, the conversation will help uncover what students want and don't want from digital and how to best integrate digital tools into the curriculum, ultimately resulting in higher engagement and better student outcomes. Matt Bilotti, Northeastern University, JoAnna Zalkovsky, Navarro College, Zak Malamed, Student Voice, Elana Golub, Northwestern University 5:00 PM - 6:00 PM Learning Spaces From Library to Innovation and Design Center Hilton | Salon A | Core Conversation | #dcsdIDC In Douglas County Schools there is a ground swell of transforma- tions going on. Learn how to get started and create a movement to shift environments and instructional practices. Discussions will also include how learning environments support new instructional practices. We will dissect some transformation projects so that you develop ideas to transform your spaces to sup- port your modern learners. Martin Atkins, SAE Chicago 5:00 PM - 6:00 PM Data Analytics A Data-Driven Culture: Who's Behind the Wheel? ACC | Room 16AB | Panel | #edudata CPE Changing teaching methods and protocol is not easy. Making sense of the plethora of data is not either. It is critical to help teachers eas- ily understand how to make sense of data usage and how to apply it to the classroom. Recent reports show the need to shift the focus from data for informing, to the creation of a culture where data is embraced, effectively used and for continued results in improved practices, programs and student achievement. During this panel, learn how to drive with data, creating the culture needed to impact change in educators and students. Sharnell Jackson, Data Driven Innovations Consulting, Gregory Firn, DreamBox Learning, Patricia Greco, School District of Menomonee Falls, Brendan Desetti, Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA) 5:00 PM - 6:00 PM Leadership A New Narrative: Storytelling for Social Change Hilton | Salon E | Panel CPE In education, data is king. But when engaging supporters, an inspiring story can be more powerful. This is true whether building a shared vision for a school community or externalizing that to mobilize change. Last winter, Principal Nadia Lopez won national attention when a student was interviewed for the Humans of NY blog. But even before, she partnered with Syreeta Gates to empow- er students to tell their story of Brownsville in a digital magazine. They'll share practical lessons from their experience with represen- tatives from New Leaders, who aim to foster and share stories like these to transform public understanding about the vital importance of leadership in creating vibrant schools. Debra Wexler, New Leaders, Nadia Lopez, Mott Hall Bridges Academy, Syreeta Gates, The Gates Preserve 5:00 PM - 6:00 PM Leadership Culture By Design Hilton | Salon G | Panel Design thinking has almost become a buzzword in progressive education, but what does 'design' as a manifesto actually benefit the culture and practice of educators? How does people-centered problem solving work out in the professional development of a staff? What role does design thinking play in brand strategy and strategic planning for schools? In this panel hear examples from the current context of four design-minded educators from across the country who believe that empathetic practices will cause schools to grow as teams and impact local communities in a big way. Q&A and tweetup to follow.
