40 / MARCH.APRIL.2016 RINKMAGAZINE.COM REAL PROGRAMS Successful programs to consider adopting by MILES McQUINN W ithout question, the game of sled hockey has grown to mountain- ous levels since the U.S. Paralympic team took gold for the first time at the 2002 Salt Lake City Games. From having little to no funding for the national team (and still making the trip to the 1998 Nagano Games) to Labatt's recent $250,000 donation toward the growth of the game at the grassroots level, the pro- grams continue to grow by the year. There are approximately 100 grassroots programs at rinks across the nation this season—with plenty of room for more. But where does a rink get started and how can it get involved in bringing sled hockey to the ice and the community? "Network within their community … help them understand that this is a win for them too," USA Sled Hockey representa- tive Norm Page said. "They are going to have other programs coming in and using their rink. It's not just a feel good thing. It's a win-win situation. They are getting more folks into their rinks by including sled hockey as part of their programs in their local communities." As with any voyage, a captain is needed to steer the ship as well.
