By Margaret Brand The Review-Mirror Jessica Champin and Mike O'Brien are prepar- ing for their daughter four- year-old Teagan O'Brien to become the recipient of a kidney transplant in the coming weeks. The St. Ed's junior kindergarten student is on a deceased donors trans- plant list but also has the potential of receiving a kidney from a live donor. Her condition is no sur- prise for her parents who have been warned that the day would come when her kidney function would not be adequate. Teagan was born just 24 weeks into her moth- er's pregnancy and spent her first four months in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Kingston General Hospi- tal. She suffered Acute Oliguric Renal Failure in her first few days. "She had a number of challenges during those 117 days but she always seemed to beat the odds no matter how far her tiny lit- tle body pushed them," wrote her mum in a crowdfunding website www.youcaring.com. Champin has set up a crowdsourcing page where she is raising money to help pay for the inevitable expenses her family will be enduring while Teagan receives a By Margaret Brand The Review-Mirror With a desolate snow- making season almost in the books, the Village of Westport is looking at trucking another 30,000 cubic meters of waste- water to Smiths Falls this spring at a cost of as much as $400,000. The village is also plan- ning a new tactic and by- law to tackle the sump pumps they believe are also causing a significant part of the problem. The Snowfluent system actually fell behind in Feb- ruary, processing 10,176 cubic meters of waste- water in February while the inflow was 10,768 m3. In addition to mild weath- er, there were several equipment issues as well. The village also hauled 10,000m3 to Smiths Falls, at a cost of $120,000. They haven't received the bill from Smiths Falls but they charged about $30,000 in 2014 for a larg- er amount. Westport spent about $400,000 in hauling and processing expenses in 2014. "It is not if we have to haul but how much," Mayor Robin Jones said at Monday night's commit- tee of the whole meeting. With the snowmaking season pretty much ending this weekend, they face about three months of inflows before land appli- cation is allowed to begin. Lagoon one was at 158cm deep Monday (capacity 180) and the smaller lagoon 2 was at 144cm (capacity 170) Because of the potential volume, the village is get- ting new prices from vari- ous haulers this week. A By Margaret Brand The Review-Mirror This year Parks Cana- da's Ontario Waterways unit will be undertaking a new management plan for the Rideau Canal which will be completed by December. The last management plan for the waterway was in 2005, a lifetime away when the canal was a standalone unit under the direction of Superinten- dent Doug Stewart and without a UNESCO World Heritage Site designation.
