Finding Your Palette Pasadena's makeup guru, Nina Lares of The Factory Hair and Makeup Studio, demystifi es what colors work best for your skin tone. STORY BY // NINA LARES IMAGES BY // SARA SMOLA ∫ HAVE YOU EVER WALKED UP TO A COSMETIC COUNTER AND FOUND YOURSELF FEELING OVERWHELMED STARING AT HUNDREDS, SOMETIMES THOUSANDS OF COLORS ACROSS THE MAKEUP DEPARTMENT? WHEN ALL YOU WANT IS THAT ONE PERFECT LIP COLOR OR BLUSH TO BRIGHTEN YOU UP, IT CAN BE A FRUSTRATING AND CONFUSING PROCESS WHEN CHOOSING "THE ONE." The best way to begin navigating is to know your color palette. Are you a warm, cool or neutral skin tone? When you're in the sun, does your skin turn golden-brown, or do you turn pink? If you immediately tan, you're most likely warm-toned. If you burn quickly, you're probably cool-toned. How about your jewelry? Does gold compliment your skin or is platinum more fl attering? If you prefer yourself in gold you're most likely warm-toned. Silver? Most likely cool. If you don't fall completely on either side of the spectrum 100 percent of the time, you can be considered neutral. Here are three vivacious beauty looks for different types of skin tones—you're sure to fi nd a look you'll love that will work wonderfully with your skin tone. Warm Skin Tone If you have warm undertones, you look best when you wear colors that are gold, copper, bronze or any of the earth tones (orange, olive, yellow or brown) paired with a warm peach or coral blush. When picking out your perfect red lipstick, choose a warm, orange-based brown red. I wanted to create a natural look for my model, Rhea. This warm, glowing, beauty hardly requires an ounce of anything on her face so I skipped the heavy foundation in favor of a primer to just even out her skin tone. I prefer to use Dermalogica Skin Perfect Primer, which is an illuminating makeup prep base. It's great for evening out any type of skin tone and will enhance your natural beauty by giving your face a natural, radiant glow. To make sure any trouble spots or dark circles on Rhea were covered, I dabbed on concealer for a fl awless fi nish. Concealer is great for when you don't want to wear a full face of makeup but want to look polished. In keeping with the look's natural aesthetic, I gave her a slight fl ush with a light pink blush and a glossy, nude lip. To take this day look to the next level (perfect for cocktails after work or a date night), I added a coat of liquid liner to Rhea's upper lash line for that coveted cat eye and brightened up her face with a hot, red lip to turn her into a femme fatale ready for a night out. Another coat of mascara for extra lash-lengthening was all it took to give her lashes extra "oomph" and to complete this "Pasadiva" look.
