GORDON H. SASAKI, M.D., F.A.C.S. Board-Certifi ed Aesthetic Plastic Surgeon Aesthetic & Advanced Fat Grafting Cell Center As an academic surgeon and graduate of Yale Medical School and Plastic Surgery Residency, Dr. Sasaki was full-time faculty of Plastic Surgery at Parkland Hospital (University of Texas, Southwestern) and Chief at Los Angeles County Hospital (USC) and is currently a Clinical Professor at Loma Linda Medical School. The advantages of body fat, as graft tissue, are its bio-compatibility, availability, and naturalness with an established safety profi le for both small and large volume replacement after aging or traumatic soft tissue loss. A disadvantage, how- ever, continues to be its long-term retention. For the past fi fteen years, many academic institutions and private practitioners, including this practice, have sought to improve the acquisi- tion, processing and injection of fat by engaging in clinical research under Investigational Review Boards (IRBs) for reconstructive (breast recon- struction) and aesthetic (face, hands, breast, and buttocks) challenges of fat defi ciencies. A recent change in clinical research has been to supplement or concentrate fat grafts with growth factors derived from the patient's own sources in order to increase its longevity. As President-Elect for the Aesthetic Stem Cell Society and a member of the International Fat Society and Stem Cell Society, Dr. Sasaki is aware of demands to interface with other aesthetic specialties, clinical investigators, and the FDA to advance regenerative medicine in a responsible scientifi c manner. To that end, his practice was selected to conduct the fi rst IRB study in the USA with LipoGems™, an FDA- approved device, that has shown to obtain one of the highest levels of a patient's regenerative cells from their own fat tissue by mechanical means for longer fat grafting results. He is also one of the fi rst investigators to receive an IRB-conducted study on Platelet-Rich Plasma studies (Terumo-Harvest Technology) for improving aesthetic results from the patient's own platelet growth factors.
