More than Skin Deep True beauty is a result of health, happiness and knowing yourself. STORY BY // AMBER NELSON IMAGES BY // FERNANDO CERDA ∫ BEAUTY IS A COMPLICATED AND VERY PERSONAL SUBJECT. WHILE HOLLYWOOD HOLDS UP ILLUSTRATIONS OF THE TRENDING LOOKS OF THE MOMENT, THE BEAUTY INDUSTRY PROVIDES A NEVER-ENDING SUPPLY OF NEW PRODUCTS AND TECHNIQUES TO BRING COMMONERS A BIT CLOSER TO THE CULTURAL BEAUTY IDEAL. THAT ONGOING CYCLE FEEDS THE ECONOMY WITH HUNDREDS OF BILLIONS of dollars each year and inspires women (and some men) to continually try new skin care, hair care and body beautifying rituals. While media often provides plenty of hype, real breakthroughs in science regularly advance the pursuit of beauty. From nutrition and exercise to skin and hair care, new developments are never ending. Today's science and technology can completely resurface the skin, remove and replace fat stores to reshape the body, and transform hair texture, color, length, and style. The sheer volume of products, procedures and possibilities can be overwhelming, There is a trick to making all these advances work for you. Start by deciding what beauty means to you. Get real about your goals. With the right products and time commitment, everyone can have great skin but not everyone will be a size two or sport those famous Kardashian curves. Determine which of your own unique attributes you love most and pursue genuine health. Find the profes- sionals that align with your views, support your goals, and can encourage you to consider new options as they come on the market. Trust your team of professionals or replace them. Needs change over time and the hair stylist you loved in your thirties may not work for you in your fifties. The relationships you build with fitness experts, skin care professionals and hair stylists can help you embody your personal beauty ideal throughout all the phases of your life. BODY "A woman's body is so incredibly powerful." Fundamentally, the body is about function. It's a fascinating, highly complex combina- tion of interconnected systems. Achieving beauty with healthy choices takes discipline, motivation and sometimes, a little help. At 30, Kamille Rose Soler has worked hard to arrive at a place of comfort and satisfaction with the way her body looks and feels. She's naturally high energy and active, a seeker who is always searching to find her next challenge whether it's in her work, her personal development, or her fitness routine. She's worked hard to find her present state of balance. As a child in a traditional Phillipino household, rice and fried foods were a staple of her family diet along with a steady stream of basketball and physical play with her cousins. The love of sport stayed with her but her physical activity wasn't always enough to keep her weight in check. Recognizing Kamille's love of food at an early age, her grandmother traded out some of the less healthy aspects of her diet for fruit to help combat unnecessary weight gain. Her family handled the food changes with love and support, never shame or judgment—though kids at school weren't always so kind. Her love for basketball helped develop her athletic body and provide an outlet for her energy and fed her need for challenges. A player through high school, she also took up volleyball during the off season. Once she was off to college, she broadened her fitness activities to include dance, running and other physical endeavors. It was a roommate that fully introduced Kamille to a fitness lifestyle. Her roommate planned meals to power workouts, made it a priority to locate the gym in a new neighborhood, and explored various activities to make physicality a part of every day and, in the process, found happiness and balance. Today, Kamille counts on both smart eating and smart training to make her body both strong and beautiful. Fitness isn't a fad for Kamille, it's a way of life. She works long hours in her marketing role at the THNQ Tank, a real estate collective focusing on community improvement. She is also always regularly involved in some aspect of personal development whether it's reading, workshops or seminars, and she volunteers her time and expertise to the causes she cares most about. Even with numerous commitments beyond the gym, Kamille has kept fitness a cornerstone FEBRUARY 2016 61 feature3_Feb16.indd 61 1/20/16 2:40 PM
