By Margaret Brand The Review-Mirror An early 1900's boat house which had sunk so low that it had become a landmark of Chaffey's Lock is now on dry land. On Monday a crane travelled down the Opinicon Road from Napanee, down Herman Road and down by the shore where it lifted the boathouse out of the water and into the air "The roof was touch- ing the water, it had sunk eight feet," said Brown who has been hatching plans to save it and restore it to new heights. The boat house was built at the beginning of the 20th century by an Ohio lawyer, David J. Anderson who had a camp on the property, a building which eventual- ly burned. "It's going to cost me a lot to restore. I'm an historical guy when the opportunity presents itself. I'm the steward of it and I take that respon- After crunching the numbers, it appears the Village of Westport will have to haul away 33 per cent more wastewater this spring than previously thought. Council, at last week's committee of the whole meeting, discussed haul- ing 30,000 cubic metres for treatment in Smiths Falls, but when the final report came in for this Monday's meeting, they upped that to 40,000m3. They hauled away 10,000m3 earlier this year, at a cost of $120,000, but the disastrous snowmak- ing season caused the need for more. Hauling occurred in 2014, at a cost of about $400,000 but the village made it through last sea- son without hauling. The village is currently seeking prices from haulers for the larger amount. As of March 1, 2016, levels in the two lagoons totaled 93 per cent of design capacity, compared to 31 per cent a year ago. The designed goal for March 1 is 10 per cent. Also in 2015, a total of 50,547m3 of the flow into the lagoons came from somewhere other than the village's water wells. Water customers used 85,556m3 in 2015, according to a report last week. A total of 136,103 m3 was pumped to the lagoons over the course of the year meaning about 37 per cent of the flows came from leaky sewer pipes and sump pumps. In 2014, the number was also close to 40 per cent. Maple syrup producers have been out in the woods this week making final preparations for the start of the syrup produc- tion and first heavy run of sap. After wishing for rising temperatures producers will now be looking out for colder nights to bring on the freeze and thaw rhythm which will keep the sap flowing. Maple producers rely on an alternation of tem- peratures below and above freezing to provide posi- tive pressure to drive the sap out of the tree in the daytime and negative pressure during below freezing at night. Last year producers got some of those conditions if they were ready when the perfect weather came. "It was a super crop last year, everyone got a good crop," said Bruce Leggett, who with his wife Cathy produces Syrup at their farm at Crosby.
