At its pinnacle, the little village had a sawmill, a stone gristmill, a church, a school, stores and a cheese factory. Once home to about 150 people, the population dwindled once the area's natural resources were depleted and the newly-built rail- roads took business elsewhere. There is little frost in the ground this winter so the run off that normally begins with warmer spring temperatures is well under way. WATSON stresses sump pumps that drain into sanitary sewers are illegal and contrary to the Vil- lage of Westport Municipal bylaw. The liquid from the sump pump belongs in storm sewers or on the surface of the ground, and not in the sanitary sewers. When clear water gets into the sanitary sewers, it must be moved and treated like sani- tary waste. This is expensive to treat and limits the capacity of the lagoon for their intended use. An eight-inch sanitary sewer can handle domes- tic wastewater flow from up to 200 homes, but only eight sump pumps, operating at full capacity will overload this same eight-inch line. Think of it this way - each and every illegal sump pump has a significant, negative impact on the sanitary sys- tem. WATSON is here doing his part to educate everyone to achieve the goal of reducing the vol- ume of water being treated by 10% in 2017, WOW. Now it is up to you to help us achieve our goal. Until next week, WATSON says, remem- ber to think water conservation.
