By Margaret Brand The Review-Mirror PAWS (Prevent Anoth- er Westport Stray) fundraising has achieved concrete results in limiting the cat population in West- port with the neutering of 24 cats last year. Over 40 kittens were found new homes through the surrender to three humane societies as well as the placement into homes using the group's own contacts. The group is using the trap, neuter, release method of feline popula- tion control that has proved effective around the world. "Our colonies have become, smaller, and healthier, because of our efforts, at no cost or effort to the village," said spokesperson Ken Rose. A colony which he has been caring for with his partner Deborah numbered 12 just two years ago and has since been reduced to three through adoptions and natural deaths. Don Goodfellow has also seen progress in the reduction of the number of cats around the village after feeding stray cats for 20 or so years. A group of cats who live at the bottom of the mountain has been reduced to around eight through the TNR program and only have two more cats to be neutered. "It's made a big differ- ence in that location," said Goodfellow who besides daily visits to the moun- tain group also has a bit of a colony around his own home on Main Street. Rose also doesn't think licensing cats is realistic. "Domesticated and feral cats have been around for millennium, they've been digging in gardens and roaming the streets since time immemorial. They dig in poor men's gardens as well as rich men's petunias," said Rose who isn't sym- pathetic to an idea present- ed last week at the West- port village council meet- ing to license cats. "If anyone thinks they can simply catch and put a license on a feral cat, I'd like them to step right up and try it," he said. The group is looking forward to holding another fundraiser in the coming months after the success of last August's fundraising dinner which has con- tributed to steady progress in the humane control of local cats. Contributions to PAWS can be made at Lake Effects and at Pinecone in Westport where there are also knitted cat balls for purchase to benefit PAWS. For more information about the group's program contact Ken Rose at Lake Effects.
