By Howie Crichton The Review-Mirror Tankers started haul- ing Westport's waste- water to Smiths Falls last week and they were adding trucks at the start of this week in an effort to put a dent in lagoon levels. Bartel Environmental Services, the hauler who provided the same ser- vice in 2014 and earlier this winter, added more trucks starting Monday. They now have up to six trucks making as many as 34 trips per day, carry- ing between 40 and 45 cubic metres (m3) a load – or just under 1500 m3 daily. They also plan to start hauling some on Satur- day's as well but could still be here a while if last week's numbers contin- ue. "As of Friday, they had hauled 4330 cubic metres but they just brought up the number of trips," Westport Clerk- Treasurer Scott Bryce told Council Monday. With no hauling over the weekend, the levels in the main lagoon one actually edged up. It may have been sunny and dry Thursday through Sun- day, but rainfall and thawing from the previ- ous few days was starting to show up and the Snowfluent season is essentially over. They need at least six hours of -7°C for any effective treatment. "Over the last four days the flows ranged from 515 to 616 cubic metres per day, an aver- age of 575," Bryce told council Monday. Lagoon one creeped up to 165cm deep – it's capacity is 180 cm. Lagoon two has been kept at 148 cm deep. Its capacity is 170cm and is used as the source for summer application. It can't start until at least the end of May. Westport estimates they may have to haul up to 40,000 m3 so they can make it to June. The village has applied to the Ministry of Environment for permis- sion to land apply again this summer. They have been given permission for the past four years starting back when the Snowfluent system trou- bles first surfaced. They hope 2016 will be the last season for Snowfluent and summer Enthusiasm for a renewed Westport and Rideau Lakes Chamber of Commerce has continued to grow after the launch of the 2016 membership campaign last month. Chamber members met last Wednesday at Elly's in Westport. The attendance of 35 people, including busi- nesses from outside of Westport is an indication that new outreach with meetings in Rideau Lakes and a membership drive could bring new spirit of cooperation among the area's business communi- ty. "To see so many busi- nesses is a positive turn- around for a chamber which was imploding," said chamber co-chair Ken Rose. A canvas of potential members has around 65 ready to sign up for 2016, said Co-chair Marty Hawkins. "I've had no one say they wouldn't be a mem- ber of the chamber. I'm confident by July we'll have over 100," he said. The chamber is plan- ning on meeting in Port- land on April 20, part of a rotation of meetings from Westport to Rideau Lakes. The renewed chamber will be developing a new website under the leader- ship of a new member of the Chamber executive, Gary Petro, who operates Terra Utopia an informa- tion technology service.
